At Famly, we're committed to giving millions of children a better start to life. But that is no simple task. It will take bucket loads of ambition, dedication, and skills to get us there. And it will take a great culture.

Keeping Famly true to its culture was a little simpler when we were only 7 people - you could fit the entire company in the elevator.

Now that we're much bigger, we've learnt it's helpful to write our values down so that team members old and new understand what makes Famly feel so uniquely Famly. And it shows the kind of hardworking and kind people we want to join us on our journey.

If every team across every office looks like the one described below, not only will we run a successful business, but we'll have collectively created a wonderful place to work and ensure that every small decision we make help provide a better start for millions of children.

These values are what we hire for, promote for, and calibrate performance against — not abstract ideals, but what we expect to see day to day.

Our 4 company principles

These are the concrete principles that feed into the way we work as a company. They're statements that help us make decisions, and showcase why working at Famly is so special. You won't get scored on them in a 1:1, but incorporating these principles into your day-to-day help make Famly the best it can be.

1. Surrounded by talent

We hire extremely talented and ambitious people and trust their instincts.

The people we hire are kind, smart, and very ambitious, so we are all inspired to be better. That means we value and look for expertise to solve problems. We take hiring extremely seriously and would rather wait to find the right person than to just fill a seat. The bar is high.

We celebrate Individual Contributors, and ensure that success shouldn't automatically mean stepping into management. ICs do the largest chunk of our work, and we want to make sure that everybody is in a role that leverages their individual potential and passion.

A very talented team means we can move beyond just looking at data in favour of the gut instinct of highly talented and experienced people. Yes, we use data in our decisions, but working with people with great instinct means we trust them, take calculated risks, and move faster towards more ambitious goals.

2. Choose simplicity

We fight hard to keep things simple.

It's much easier to keep adding something rather than finding a simpler solution, but this makes processes difficult in the long run. For example "just adding a field" in the CRM to help with data collection can easily add hours worth of work across another team when rolled out, so we must ask if it is really worth it or if we could automate it instead. We want to even go beyond that and think two steps ahead for our customers and colleagues to make their everyday a little bit less complicated.

It’s often said ‘perfection is when there is nothing left to take away’ and we buy into the idea that quality is often subtractive, not additional. We should strive for simplicity but we are not so naive as to think simple and easy are synonyms - complex solutions are normally quicker and easier to find and so we take the hard route now to increase speed down the line. We apply this principle to how we work, but also to how we build our organisation - keeping it flat and making sure teams can move forward fast with as little coordination and internal friction overhead as possible.

3. Friendliness is a superpower

We're warm, playful, inclusive - and very ambitious. These aren't contradictions.

Some companies are kind. Others are ambitious. We believe we can be both - and that they make each other stronger. Kindness without ambition becomes complacency. Ambition without kindness becomes toxic. At Famly, we hold high standards because we care about the mission, and we are generous to one another because we care about the people and we have the heart in the right place. We believe in doing things the right way and refuse to take shortcuts.
